The fetal bovine serum is heated in a water bath with dextran and activated charcoal. The activated charcoal, together with the substances bound to it, is then removed by means of centrifugation and filtration.
This treatment minimizes lot-to-lot variations in serum.

- Experiments involving reduced growth factors (prevention of cell differentiation).
