Molecular biology focuses on the structure, biosynthesis and function of DNA and RNA at the molecular level and how these interact with each other and with proteins. Molecular biology techniques including PCR, cloning, mutagenesis, and recombinant expression, are essential for modern biological and medical research. This course will give you an introduction to standard DNA and RNA techniques.

The theoretical part includes:

  • Basic knowledge of molecular biology
  • Structure and synthesis of macromolecules
  • Principles of cloning
  • Cloning vectors
  • Restriction enzymes
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
  • Gene regulation and gene expression

The practical part includes:

  • Plasmid preparation
  • Determination of nucleic acid concentrations
  • RNA isolation and reverse transcription
  • Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
  • DNA gel electrophoresis, documentation, gel extraction
  • Restriction digest, vector dephosphorylation, ligation of DNA
  • Generation of competent cells and their transformation
  • Over-night cultures and selection on plates, blue white selection
  • Restriction analysis

Technical and scientific staff members without any previous knowledge or those possessing only a basic knowledge of molecular biology.

Dr. Britt Lemke studied biology in Potsdam. In 2004, she received her Ph.D. from the Max-Delbrück-Center for Molecular Medicine in the area of hematopoietic development. After this, she held a postdoc position at the neurosurgical university clinic Heidelberg with the topics proteomics, angiogenesis, tumor development, and immuno therapy of brain tumors. In 2008, she joined the PromoCell Academy as lab manager and lecturer.
