Schneider‘s Drosophila

Our Schneider's Drosophila medium is a classic medium for insect cell culture. It was originally developed for the cultivation of Drosophila cells, but can also be used for other dipteran cell lines.

The cell culture medium does not contain any proteins, lipids or growth factors. For this reason, our Schneider's Drosophila medium must be supplemented with fetal calf serum for successful cell culture. Schneider's Drosophila Medium uses a sodium bicarbonate buffer system and requires a CO2 atmosphere of 5 to 10 % to maintain physiological pH.

Good to know

The fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster is very well suited as a model for basic research: they are small, very easy to keep in the laboratory and do not make great demands on breeding conditions. The genome of Drosophila melanogaster consists of only 4 pairs of chromosomes, three of which are about the same size and the fourth is so small and contains so few genes that it can be neglected in most crossing experiments. Many important basic principles, such as the gene concept and the first gene map with a linear sequence of genes on the chromosome, were developed on fruit flies.
