G418

G418 (geniticin) is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that has a toxic effect on prokayrotic and eukaryotic cells. It blocks protein synthesis by disrupting ribosomal function. In eukaryotic cell culture, G418 serves as a selection antibiotic for transformed cells that have been stably transfected with neomycin resistance genes.
