Hygromycin B is a special aminoglycoside antibiotic that has a toxic effect on prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. It blocks protein synthesis in bacteria, fungi and higher eukaryotic cells by interrupting translocation, resulting in polymerase reading errors and chain termination. In cell culture, hygromycin B serves as a selection antibioticfor transformed cells transfected with hygromycin B resistance genes (hyp or hph). Since hygromycin B has a different antibiotic mode of action than G418, both selection antibiotics can also be ideally used in combination.
