DMEM/F-12
DMEM/F-12 is a 1:1 mixture of Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) and Ham's F-12 (Ham's Nutrient Mixture F-12). This formulation is used as a basal medium for the cultivation of a wide range of mammalian cells (e.g. MDCK cells, glial cells, fibroblasts, human endothelial cells, rat fibroblasts). DMEM is a modified Eagle medium and is characterized by its quadruple content of vitamins and amino acids. Ham's F-12 is based on Ham's F-10 medium and is a basal medium developed for serum-free cell culture.
Since the formulation of DMEM/F-12 does not contain any proteins or growth factors, 10% fetal calf serum (FBS) should be added to the medium for cell culture.
