Heat inactivation of a serum is suitable for inactivating interfering components such as proteins of the complement system, antibodies, active enzymes or vitamins. Heat-inactivated FBS is particularly suitable for immunological studies, studies on the complement system or for vitamin studies. It is also suitable for cultivating sensitive cell lines or for screening certain viruses or for the propagation of viruses.
We inactivate our FBS with a carefully controlled process for 30 min at exactly 56°C for 30 min. After the 30 min, the FBS is immediately cooled down to RT to avoid excessive heat exposure and to prevent damage to important growth factors.

Good to know
In order to create in vivo conditions for in vitro cell culture, serum is often added to the cell culture medium. Serum serves as a source of growth factors, lipids, hormones and minerals for the cells. Fetal bovine serum (FBS) is particularly rich in growth factors and contains few antibodies that could interfere with cell cultivation. This unique composition makes FBS one of the most important supplements for cell proliferation in in vitro cell culture.
Heat inactivation
Heat inactivates active serum proteins such as the complement system, antibodies or other enzymes. The heat inactivation of our serum takes place at 56°C (30 min) in a shaking water bath. Shaking minimizes the formation of protein aggregates or precipitates. After 30 minutes, the serum is cooled to room temperature to prevent damage to essential proteins such as growth factors or vitamins.
