Our Foetal Bovine Serum (FBS) has been sterilized using a gamma sterilization process. A specially developed, gentle sterilization process (25-35 kGy) was used in order not to impair the quality of the serum. Gamma-irradiated serum is particularly suitable for the production of vaccines, biopharmaceutical products and viruses.

Good to know
Gamma sterilization uses cobalt-60 radiation to kill microorganisms. Gamma rays penetrate both the glass bottle and the serum liquid, enabling efficient high-throughput sterilization.
For gamma sterilization, FBS bottles are generally arranged on a pallet and transported to the radiation source. A high irradiation dose of 58 kilogray (kGy) is used to ensure that even inner bottles receive a sufficient irradiation dose. However, the high irradiation dose and the resulting heating of the serum can be harmful to outer FBS bottles and destroy important serum components. Using a specially developed irradiation process in individual, small boxes, we guarantee gentle gamma irradiation at 25-35 kGy. This ensures good serum quality even with maximum inactivation of contaminants.
In order to create in vivo conditions for in vitro cell culture, serum is often added to the cell culture medium. Serum serves as a source of growth factors, lipids, hormones and minerals for the cells. FBS is particularly rich in growth factors and contains few antibodies that could interfere with cell cultivation. This unique composition makes FBS one of the most important supplements for cell proliferation in in-vitro cell culture.
