EBSS
Earle's Balanced Salt Solution (EBSS) is a buffered, isotonic salt solution. EBSS is typically used to maintain physiological pH and osmolarity in cell culture applications. It also provides the cells with essential inorganic ions. EBSS is used for washing tissues and cells or in combination with additional reagents in the treatment of cells and tissues.
We offer EBSS contains sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) as a buffer system and is designed for use in an atmosphere with 5 % CO2.
Properties
- Without Mg2+, Ca2+
- With 2.2 g/l NaHCO3
- With phenol red
Good to know
What is the difference between PBS and EBSS?
The most important difference from PBS (phosphate-buffered saline) lies in its composition and function: PBS essentially contains only phosphate buffer and salts and serves primarily as a simple washing solution with no nutritional function. EBSS, on the other hand, has a more complex formulation, contains additional ions, and is often designed for CO₂-dependent buffer systems (e.g., with sodium bicarbonate). As a result, EBSS more closely mimics physiological conditions and is better suited for many cell types, especially when cells need to remain metabolically active for short periods.
