SF4 Baculo Express

SF4 Baculo Express is a special, serum-free insect cell culture medium for the cultivation of various Spodoptera frugiperda (SF9, SF21), BTI-TN-5B1-4 (High FiveTM) and Drosophila melanogaster (D.Mel-2) cells. SF4 Baculo Express is also suitable for the production of recombinant proteins and viruses. SF4 Baculo Express is a ready-to-use medium and contains all the necessary additives (steroids, amino acids, organic acids, glutamine and glucose) for the cultivation of insect cells in an optimal composition. Yeast extract has also been added to the optimized medium. SF4 Baculo Express enables high cell densities (up to 2x 10⁷ cells/ml) and thus high yields of recombinant proteins (in bioreactors and shake flasks). In addition, the cell culture medium requires only short adaptation intervals. With some common cell lines, a direct change is even possible.

Insect cells such as Sf9, Sf21, BTI-TN-5B1-4 (High Five™), and Drosophila melanogaster (D.Mel-2) cells are frequently used in cell culture because they are particularly well-suited for recombinant protein expression. When combined with the baculovirus expression system, Sf9, Sf21, and High Five™ cells, in particular, enable the efficient production of complex proteins that exhibit many of the posttranslational modifications typical of eukaryotic cells. High Five™ cells are characterized by particularly high protein expression rates and are the preferred choice for the production of recombinant proteins.

Advantages of SF4 Baculo Express Medium

Cell Density – Cell densities of 2 × 10⁷ cells/mL can be achieved, thereby increasing yields of recombinant protein compared to SF-3 in bioreactors and shake flasks
Versatility – The medium is suitable for SF9 and SF12 as well as for High Five™ and Drosophila cells
Adaptation – In just a few passages, you can switch from serum-supplemented media, such as TC100 or Grace’s Medium, to SF4 Baculo Express Medium. For some commercially available cell lines, a direct switch from other serum-free (but not protein-free) media to SF-4 Medium is even possible.
Protein yield – Our results indicate a significant increase in recombinant protein yield compared to previously used media (1.5- to 2.7-fold)
