Glasgow's MEM is a modification of Eagle's Minimal Essential Medium (EMEM) and was developed to investigate genetic factors influencing cell competence. Glasgow's MEM is optimized for primary hamster kidney cells (such as BHK-21), but is suitable for a wide range of adherent and non-adherent mammalian cells.
Glasgow's MEM contains twice the concentration of amino acids and vitamins of the original Basal Medium Eagle (BME). However, the cell culture medium does not contain any proteins, lipids or growth factors. For this reason, Glasgow's MEM must be supplemented with 10 % fetal calf serum for successful cell culture. Glasgow's MEM uses a sodium bicarbonate buffer system and requires a CO2 atmosphere of 5 to 10 % to maintain physiological pH.
