For our FBS Exosome Depleted, exosomes were efficiently removed from natural FBS (origin: South America) using a gentle method. The exosome content could be reduced by 90% and is ideally suited for research into intercellular communication and exosome secretion.

Good to know

Exosomes are small vesicles (approx. 30 - 90 nm) secreted by the cell that contain nucleic acids or proteins. They serve the cell as a transport vehicle, for intercellular communication and for the removal of defective cell components. Exosomes are mainly formed by immune cells, nerve cells and tumor cells and play an important role in the immune response and in the development of tumors. It has been shown that tumors modulate their tumor microenvironment through the secretion of exosomes. Therefore, the study of exosome secretion and cell-cell communication is an important part of tumor research.

In order to create in vitro conditions for in vitro cell culture, serum is often added to the cell culture medium. Serum serves the cells as a source of growth factors, lipids, hormones and minerals. Fetal bovine serum (FBS) is particularly rich in growth factors and contains few antibodies that could interfere with cell cultivation. This unique composition makes FBS one of the most important supplements for cell proliferation in in-vitro cell culture.

FBS is naturally rich in exosomes. Therefore, the mixing of cellular secreted exosomes and serum exosomes is a critical problem in exosome research. Our FBS Exosome Depleted has been treated with a special method that gently and efficiently removes exosomes (> 90%). FBS Exosome Depleted nevertheless shows comparable, outstanding performance in cell culture applications as untreated FBS and is therefore ideally suited for research into exosome secretion and the investigation of intercellular communication.
