Sustainability
Sustainability in cell culture is also an important topic for us. Taking ethical and ecological aspects into account, we pursue various strategies to make your cell cultivation more sustainable.
We have developed various approaches to minimize the impact of life science research on the environment while improving the quality and efficiency of research.
We make sure that the production of fetal calf serum (FBS) is carried out with good resource management, biodiversity control, conscious waste disposal and the reduction of greenhouse gases. FBS production is controlled by strict guidelines to ensure humane treatment of the animals. We also want to give you certainty about the origin and production of your products through increased transparency and traceability within the supply chain.
We have also expanded our product range to include synthetic alternatives to fetal calf serum (FBS) to offer you the opportunity to make your cell cultivation more sustainable.
More sustainable alternatives to FBS
FBS High Performance - The sustainable one
FBS High Performance is a semi-synthetic fetal calf serum in which the content of natural FBS is greatly reduced (only 20%). Thanks to the targeted addition of essential recombinant growth factors, FBS High Performance (Art. No.: FBS.HP.0500) is virtually defined and shows only minor batch-to-batch fluctuations. The reduction of the serum content enables us to offer a more sustainable and animal welfare promoting alternative to FBS with consistent cell culture properties.

Serum-free cell culture media
We also offer serum-free cell culture media. These synthetic media have been specially developed to enable cell cultivation without FBS or other animal products.
They therefore represent an important, sustainable alternative to FBS-based cell culture.
Human platelet lysate
Another important alternative to natural FBS is human platelet lysate (Art. No.: FBS.PL.100). The essential growth-promoting factors of FBS are obtained from activated bovine platelets.Human platelet lysate is derived from human platelets and contains all essential nutrients and growth factors from platelet lysis.Human platelet lysate is produced from unused human platelet concentrates and is an ideal xenogeneic-free substitute for FBS.
It shows comparable to improved cell growth in adherent and non-adherent primary cells (including primary mesenchymal stem cells) and is successfully used as an additive in human and animal in vitro cell culture as well as for in vivo wound healing and tissue reconstruction.
